Senior Automation Engineer

Location: Remote (Must be available during Eastern Time business hours)
Type: Part-Time (10–20 hours/week)
Team: ATAN Robotics (atanrobotics.com)

About Us

At ATAN Robotics, we design and integrate robotic systems for manufacturers that need fast ROI, high-mix flexibility, and turnkey deployment.

Our automation solutions tackle real-world manufacturing challenges such as:

  • CNC machine tending
  • Palletizing and material handling
  • Robotic welding
  • Production QA and inspection

We are a small, senior team of engineers spanning mechanical, electrical, robotics, and software disciplines. This allows us to design and implement high-impact automation projects without the red tape of larger integrators.

We’re seeking a Senior Automation Engineer to join us on a flexible, part-time basis (10–20 hours/week). This is not just another engineering role: you’ll own your work, collaborate directly with clients, and act as a strategic technical partner on advanced manufacturing automation projects.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Design, develop, and implement robotic automation solutions for high-mix manufacturing operations.
  • Program and configure robotic arms, PLCs, and automation controllers to execute machine tending, palletizing, welding, and QA tasks.
  • Integrate robotics systems with existing manufacturing workflows, including ERP, MES, and material handling systems.
  • Collaborate with clients to understand operational bottlenecks and design solutions that deliver measurable ROI.
  • Provide technical leadership during project scoping, prototyping, and deployment phases.
  • Work closely with mechanical, electrical, and software engineers to ensure seamless system integration.
  • Participate in client calls and provide clear, actionable guidance on automation strategy and best practices.

You Might Be a Fit If You…

  • Have excellent communication skills and can explain complex automation concepts to clients and colleagues.
  • Take pride in being thorough, organized, and proactive — delivering robust solutions without surprises.
  • Are comfortable programming robots, PLCs, and custom automation scripts.
  • Understand how to balance fast deployment with long-term maintainability and safety.
  • Thrive in a small, highly skilled team where your work directly impacts client success.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of professional engineering experience, ideally in industrial automation, robotics, or controls engineering
  • Experience programming industrial robots (e.g., Fanuc, ABB, KUKA, Universal Robots)
  • Proficiency with PLC programming, HMI design, and industrial communication protocols (Ethernet/IP, Modbus, Profinet, etc.)
  • Experience integrating automation with manufacturing software systems (ERP, MES, WMS)
  • Strong scripting/programming skills (Python, JavaScript, or equivalent) for custom automation and robotics workflows
  • Comfortable using GitHub, Notion, Slack, and async collaboration tools
  • Available for client calls and internal collaboration during Eastern Time business hours

Nice to Have

  • Experience with high-mix, low-volume production environments
  • Familiarity with vision systems, sensors, and quality inspection automation
  • Knowledge of safety standards and compliance (ISO, ANSI/RIA, OSHA)
  • Experience building turnkey systems with measurable ROI metrics
  • Hands-on experience with collaborative robots and robotic welding systems
